Blow down is the process of opening the valves at the bottom of the mud drum. This is done to remove sludge and scale that has accumulated at the lowest point of the boiler. The accumulated waste are products deposited there from the action of the boiler chemicals doing there job.

Blow off, also known as surface blow or continuous blow is through a metered valve at the water level. This process removes the TDS, total dissolved solids, from the water surface area.
